In the early hours of Tuesday 27th January, Storm Chandra brought severe flooding across the country and unfortunately the Beacon was unable to hold back the volume of water descending onto it from the surrounding roads and paths. On Tuesday morning, we were alerted to the volume of water still sitting on the road outside, and when entering the Beacon discovered that every room in our building was under water.
We placed calls for help out to our local community and were overwhelmed by the positive responses from the whole Beacon community, everyone came out with mops, brooms and shovels and helped clear debris from outside while others swept the water out of the building. More people arrived with carpet cleaners and dehumidifiers to suck out the rest of the water. On Wednesday the cleanup continued, with people arriving to clean away the watermarks.

Our insurers have been to inspect the building and were pleasantly surprised after seeing the videos of the insides of the Beacon. We have had to remove all carpets and most of the other flooring, and have industrial dryers around the building, working hard to dry it out completely.

We still have some way to go to recover fully due to the extent of the damage but thanks to your incredible spirit, hard work, generosity and tremendous support, we’re now in the best position possible, and it’s all because of you.

We are working as hard and fast as possible to re-open and get back to serving you, our local community.

Unfortunately we are unable to accept any bookings for hire at present. Please keep an eye on our Facebook and Instagram feeds for regular updates. We look forward to welcoming our hirers back as soon as possible. Please contact: info@thebeaconcentre.org if you have any queries.
